Marbella Car Hire: What Do Excess, CDW and Deposit Mean?
Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read
Before booking a Marbella hire car, open the rental conditions and find three separate entries: excess, CDW and deposit. CDW can limit your liability without removing it; the excess is what may remain payable after damage; and the deposit is the amount reserved on the accepted card. Do not infer one from another. Choose an offer whose card, deposit and protection conditions you can actually meet at the desk, even if another result shows a lower daily rate.
Excess is your remaining exposure
The excess is the part of a covered loss that can remain your responsibility. It is not the rental price and it is not automatically equal to the deposit. Damage and theft may also have different excesses. Read which parts of the vehicle are excluded, because tyres, glass, underside, keys or interior damage can be treated separately.
CDW means collision damage waiver. The name sounds broad, but it does not promise zero liability or cover every event. An extra protection product may reduce what the supplier charges, or it may reimburse eligible costs later after documents are submitted. Those are materially different arrangements. Check who provides the cover, what evidence a claim needs and whether you would still have to pay the supplier first.
The deposit is about payment capacity
The supplier commonly reserves a deposit on a card at collection. The exact amount, accepted card type, cardholder name and available credit belong to the specific offer. A broker accepting payment online does not prove that the rental desk will accept the same card for security. If the named main driver does not hold the required card, the booking can fail even though it was prepaid.
Use the offer’s rental conditions to answer four questions: how much is reserved, whether it is blocked or charged, when it is released, and which cards are excluded. Recheck shortly before travel rather than relying on a generic FAQ.
Fuel, drivers and desk additions
A full-to-full fuel policy is easy to understand only if you return the vehicle at the agreed level and keep the receipt. Other policies can include refuelling or service charges. An additional driver normally needs to appear on the contract; never assume that a companion may drive merely because both are insured at home.
Age rules, young-driver charges, child seats, late collection and cross-border travel also vary. Enter the real driver age while searching and put requested extras into the comparison before choosing. At collection, ask the agent to show any new product separately from what you already bought. You are checking overlap, not arguing against protection.

Inspect first, sign second
Match the contract to the booking voucher. Record existing marks in good light, including wheels, windows and fuel level, and ask for omissions to be added before leaving. Keep the return record. If the desk proposes a different car category, confirm whether the deposit, fuel policy and excess also change.
If all this administration serves only one long outing, the guided Caminito del Rey day trip from Marbella removes the rental desk and parking from that day.

Recommendation
Choose the clearest acceptable conditions, not the smallest headline. Save the voucher and terms you booked, then compare them line by line at collection. Start with Marbella offers on Discover Cars and reject any offer whose deposit or card requirement would be difficult for you to meet.
