For most people, book the guided kayak tour in Puerto Banús: at €45 it is the cheapest of the four, it has the best rating (4.9, from 26 reviews) and it includes a life jacket, a bottle of water and a photo report. If you would rather start from Marbella’s own marina, the kayak tour with introductory lesson costs €49 and includes a shower after.

The Puerto Banús kayak tour

The tour starts at Ventura del Mar beach. According to the booking page, you paddle past El Rodeito, Playas del Duque and La Siesta, round the breakwaters and reach the mouth of Puerto Banús, with the villas and yachts in view. You can choose a sunrise or a morning session; the operator recommends sunrise even though it means an early start.

Kayak, paddle, life jacket, an instructor and a bottle of water are included, plus photos of the trip. The guide speaks English, Spanish and French. The booking page calls the tour suitable for all ages and skill levels, says children as young as three can come when accompanied by their parents, and says children under 7 go free. People with heart problems are listed as not suitable, alcohol and drugs are not allowed, and you bring swimwear, a towel, sandals, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses.

The sea decides how it feels. One reviewer paddled back into the wind and called it hard, though safe; another group, caught by morning rain, says the operator simply moved the start by a few hours. With 26 reviews the rating rests on a smaller base than the others.

The three trips from Marbella’s marina

All three start at NaluSur in the Real Club Marítimo de Marbella, in the Puerto Deportivo.

Kayak with introductory lesson. The page describes a lesson in basic technique, then about 105 minutes of guided paddling along the coast with views of the Sierra Blanca and a swim in warm water. Kayak, guide, shower and insurance are included; food and drinks, which you can buy at the marina afterwards, and hotel pick-up are not. No previous experience is required, groups of more than six can ask for flexible start times, and the page calls it family-friendly without naming an age.

Stand-up paddleboarding by day. The Marbella Bay tour is capped at 12 people and also needs no experience. Board, paddle, a wetsuit when needed, a guide, accident insurance and access to toilets and changing rooms are included. Groups of four or more can ask for flexible times. It is labelled family-friendly, again with no age stated, so ask the operator before bringing young children.

Stand-up paddleboarding at sunset. This is the only trip of the four that excludes young children: the booking page lists children under 8 as not suitable, and a child must be at least 8 to get their own board. A wetsuit is included if needed, depending on the time of year, and so is a drink at a beach restaurant afterwards. The description also mentions tapas, but the includes list names only the drink, so check before counting on food. The instructor speaks English, French and Spanish.

Which to choose

Beginners can start with any of them; the NaluSur pages say no experience is needed and the Puerto Banús page says all levels. A paddleboard asks more of your balance than a kayak, and you will probably get wet, which is the point on a warm day and less so in winter. Families with young children should read the limits above: the kayak listings name no minimum except that Puerto Banús accepts three-year-olds with a parent, while the sunset paddleboard session excludes under-8s.

All four listings show free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance. For a faster, louder day on the water, the water sports page also lists jet skis and parasailing. If you would rather skip paddling and have someone else drive, read how the boat hire rules changed before you book a rental. Our pick for most people remains the guided kayak tour in Puerto Banús.
